Volunteering with Berkshire St John Ambulance

If you want to be the difference in your local community, join St John Ambulance.

You can become a first aider and gain the skills needed to be the difference between life and death. Or there are many other ways you can help us save lives without ever picking up a first aid kit!

We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to help with fundraising, administration, communications and public relations.

Our fundraisers organise a huge range of events across the county each year – from fetes and fun days to collection and concerts.

We need admin people to take the strain off our frontline volunteers and we’re always on the hunt for youth leaders to help run our Badger and Cadet units.

There are behind the scenes practical jobs which need to be done, such as maintenance of our vehicle fleet. Or you could help out at some of the bigger public events we cover, using radio communications to make sure first aiders are deployed to emergencies within minutes of them happening.

We need to keep a high public profile so that people know how important our work is and support us either by giving donations or volunteering. Publicity is also the key to spreading our vital message that no one should die unnecessarily because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. For this reason we need people to provide a vital link between our volunteers and the county headquarters to enable our PR officer to publicise our work.

Our local groups typically meet once a week for training and social activities and we cover public events every week throughout the year. It’s up to you how much time you wish to give and how many duties you attend. Volunteers who help behind the scenes in support roles may only be able to spare as little as two hours a week or month. We appreciate any time you have to offer.

Many of our first aid volunteers go on to progress to other roles such as ambulance attendant, ambulance driver and first aid trainer.

You don't need any previous first aid experience, as we will train you in all you need to know. All we ask is that you are willing to learn new skills.
